Abiec warns of losses over U.S. beef tariff
30/07/2025
Abiec, which represents beef-packers including JBS and Marfrig, said the proposed measure would make it “inviable” for companies to meet expected sales of 400,000 tons to the U.S. by the end of 2025.
The United States is the second largest destination for Brazilian beef exports after China. In the first half of this year, Brazil exported around 181,000 metric tons of beef to the U.S., worth $1 billion. This represents a year-on-year increase of 113% by volume and 102% by value.
Abiec president Roberto Perosa said no other market could replace the U.S. in the short term, given the volumes involved and the prices American importers are prepared to pay. Much of the Brazilian beef exported to the U.S. is processed into hamburgers.
Mr Perosa said Abiec is in dialogue with U.S. lawmakers in a bid to prevent the tariff, which is due to take effect on August 1. He warned that restricting imports from Brazil could contribute to domestic beef price inflation in the U.S., where cattle supplies are already tight.
