Tanneries in Tamil Nadu turn to solar to cut pollution and power costs

30/04/2025
Local press has reported that a group of tanneries in the Ranipet SIPCOT industrial region of Tamil Nadu, including finished leather exporter Overseas Leathers, has shifted from firewood to solar-powered systems to reduce pollution and energy costs. Around 15–20 units now use solar air and water heaters in dyeing and finishing processes.

Government officials have urged more leather manufacturers to adopt solar energy, highlighting Tamil Nadu’s high levels of solar radiation as an opportunity for industrial use.

According to S. Gopalakrishnan, engineering maintenance manager at Overseas Leathers, high installation costs remain a barrier, but long-term savings are significant.
