Australia has reported cattle slaughter of 8.3 million head in 2024.

Red meat and livestock promotions organisation Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) said this figure represented an increase of 18% compared to 2023.

MLA went on to say that the figure for 2024 also indicated  that cattle slaughter in Australia had increased by 42% in the last two years. In 2022, cattle slaughter was just under 5.9 million, the lowest total since 1984.

But the figure for 2024 was still 10% short of the country’s record high. In 2014, Australia slaughtered more than 9.2 million head of cattle.
