Latest issue of World Leather out now

The October-November issue of World Leather is now available. It carries a detailed review of Simac Tanning Tech 2024. Other technology articles are about stamping technology’s contribution to traceability, an increased interest that Dow is addressing in anti-soiling additives, business benefits of LCA that Trumpler has identified, and recent developments in testing methods.

We also present a Leather Leaders conversation with Chen Zhanguang, vice-president of the China Leather Industry Association.

In Leather and the Circular Economy this time we add four new features, covering in substantial detail the extension to the EUDR deadlines, the sustainability-focused leather strategy that Tapestry is developing, and an ambitious new partnership linking leather companies in Pakistan and China.

This section of the magazine opens this time with something more shocking: a new analysis of the carbon footprint of unused hides that the Leather and Hide Council of America (LHCA) has carried out.

Earlier reports have suggested that one tonne of food waste, including discarded hides from abattoirs, would generate 800 kilos of CO2-equivalent in emissions. Work that LHCA has done after consulting with World Wildlife Fund and with non-profit organisation ReFED suggests that the true figure is much higher.

The new figure to emerge from this work is that one tonne of wasted hides would generate more than 13 tonnes of CO2-equivalent. This means the true figure is more than 1500% higher than previously suspected. Wasting millions of hides rather than turning them into leather may be the cause of 40 million tonnes of emissions every year.

Finally, in Beast To Beauty, we share the details of the mystery buyer of a unique Pininfarina car and explain why the unveiling caused particular excitement at the supplier of the leather for the car’s interior.

We hope you enjoy reading the whole issue.
