Next-gen designers shaping leather's future

The Istanbul Leather and Leather Products Exporters’ Association (IDMIB) is set to host its annual design competition, “Detail", aiming to foster emerging talent in Turkey’s $1.5 billion leather sector.

IDMIB members contribute approximately 70% of the nation’s leather exports, making this competition a strategic platform to drive both innovation and growth within the industry. This year’s competition will feature two categories -apparel and bag design—building on last year’s focus on footwear.

Hatice Bardiz, an IDMIB representative, highlighted leather’s durability and biodegradability as unique qualities in sustainability discussions, distinguishing it from synthetic alternatives. Mrs Bardiz explained that leather, sourced as a by-product of the food industry, has a natural connection to sustainable practices.

Gamze Saraçoglu, a fashion educator at Mimar Sinan University in Istanbul, pointed to the need for more leather-specific programmes, as students often opt for textiles due to cost factors. Both Ms Bardiz and Ms Saraçoglu regard young designers as essential to the future of Turkey’s fashion industry, with “Detail” providing a platform for their creativity.

The jury will assess entries based on innovation, manufacturability, and originality, with strict criteria for previously unawarded and unproduced designs. Through “Detail,” Turkey’s leather sector aims to support new talent while reinforcing its export market.
