EU member states approve move to impose duties on Chinese BEVs

European Union member states have approved a proposal from the European Commission to impose “definitive countervailing duties” on imports of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) from China.

The Commission said this was another step towards the conclusion of an “anti-subsidy investigation” it has carried out.

It said that, in parallel, the EU and China will continue to work to explore an alternative solution, but it insisted that any such solution would have to be compatible with the World Trade Organization and address “injurious subsidisation”.

Its reference to subsidisation is a reference to help that it says Chinese automotive brands receive permitting them to offer European consumers BEVs at cheaper prices than most other car companies can offer.
