EU names new commissioner for the environment

Swedish politician Jessika Roswall has been named as the European Union’s new commissioner for the environment. Her portfolio also includes the sustainable use of water and the circular economy.

She said she was happy and honoured to take up the brief and said her portfolio was “central to the green transition and to strengthening the competitiveness of the EU”.

A lawyer by training, Ms Roswall was formerly Sweden’s minister for EU affairs. In this capacity, she said in a speech in the European Parliament last year that farmers, also, have a crucial role to play in the green transition. “A resilient Europe needs a resilient agricultural sector,” she said.
