A lost year for garment leather producers

02/09/2024

Industry commentators in Turkey have described 2024 as “a lost year” for the country’s garment manufacturers.

Raw material prices are low, with buyers on the ground able to secure the material they need for between €1 and €2 per piece. However, demand for the finished product, leather garments, has dropped enormously.

According to local sources, the number of the active garment leather tanneries operating in the Leather Industry Zone at Usak is reducing day by day.

Consumer demand for these products is being affected by climate change, the traditionally high prices of leather garments and the comparatively cheaper price of products made from synthetic alternatives.
