Bird flu cases continue in US dairy herds

According to the state's agriculture department, cows at three dairy farms in California have tested positive for bird flu. This expands the spread of the H5N1 virus to dairy cattle in 14 U.S. states since March. Over 190 herds nationwide have been infected, with 13 cases involving dairy and poultry farm workers, federal data shows.

Concerns have been raised about potential human spread as the virus has been transmitted from birds to cows. However, federal officials maintain that bird flu poses a low risk to the public. The virus is inactivated by pasteurisation, and no human cases have been reported in California.

The affected farms in California's Central Valley have been quarantined. Infected cows are isolated and treated, while healthy cows continue producing milk for pasteurisation.

California Agriculture Secretary Karen Ross emphasized the economic challenges facing dairy farmers. The U.S. Department of Agriculture is working with state officials to confirm and contain the outbreak.
