19/08/2024

Brazilian leather industry body CICB has launched the CICB Raw Material Guide.

The guide aims to enhance traceability and transparency in the leather production process, ensuring adherence to market standards and regulatory requirements. It focuses on aligning with the European Union Deforestation-Free Regulation (EUDR) and the Brazilian Forest Code, and emphasises the importance of transparency, compliance, and sustainability.

The guide provides a framework for tracing each piece of leather back to its origin, which boosts consumer confidence and strengthens industry reputation. It details the necessary steps for compliance with socio-environmental standards, helping to mitigate risks such as fines or sanctions.

By incorporating sustainability principles, the guide addresses the increasing market demand for responsibly sourced products, positioning the leather industry as a leader in both transparency and environmental responsibility.

It defines the roles of various stakeholders—including livestock producers, slaughterhouses, tanneries, and certifiers—to ensure coordinated efforts in maintaining production chain integrity. The guide also outlines the challenges of regulatory implementation and offers a roadmap for compliance, aiming to reduce the environmental impact of leather production and enhance global competitiveness.

Overall, the guide is designed to help industry players align with international standards and meet the growing demand for traceable and responsible leather products.
