Perforation creations at Rolls-Royce
Automotive brand Rolls-Royce Motors has introduced a new craft technique, developed by in-house artisans, in its latest launch, the Cullinan Series II super-luxury SUV.
On introducing the model, the company said it was able to offer customers a new option for the interior, calling it Placed Perforation.
This is a practice of creating artwork through tiny perforations in the leather in the car’s interior. For the Cullinan Series II, designers have created a pattern inspired, Rolls-Royce said, “by the constantly changing shapes and shadows of the clouds” over its headquarters at Goodwood in southern England.
It explained that creating the design consists of putting more than 100,000 perforations, of 0.8 to 1.2 millimetres, into the leather. A single craftsperson has to check each perforation “to ensure absolute uniformity”, it said.
