World Leather April-May 2024 now available
The latest World Leather, the April-May 2024 issue, is now available to read at this link.
It offers a full round-up of APLF 2024 and a thoughtful article from two well known industry leaders, Tom Schneider and Dietrich Tegtmeyer, who argue the case for making carbon capture a component of environmental arguments in favour of leather.
Also on this subject, we include an in-depth examination of the new lifecycle analysis of US bovine leather that the Leather and Hide Council of America (L&HCA) commissioned earlier this year.
Some of the numbers to come out of this are remarkable, suggesting, for example, that the figure the Higg Materials Sustainability Index gives for leather’s contribution to water scarcity is 9800% too high. This is why L&HCA is calling for brands that have based a decision to move away from leather on the Higg Index to think again.
Our Leather and the Circular Economy section includes an update on the likely impact on the industry of the European Union’s new deforestation regulation, which makes sobering reading. We also have a celebration of women leaders in the industry, which should help to lift the mood.
