Africa leather design entries open
The Real Leather. Stay Different (RLSD) Africa Talent Leather Design Showcase '24 is now accepting entries.
The focus is on empowering small and medium-sized enterprises, along with emerging student talent, to combat the detrimental environmental impacts of fast fashion.
Kerry Brozyna, President of the Leather and Hide Council of America (LHCA), emphasised the broader significance of the event beyond mere competition: “The Real Leather. Stay Different. Africa Talent Leather Design Showcase 2024 is more than a competition. It’s a movement towards sustainability. We work to inspire designers to envision a future where fashion and environmental stewardship go hand in hand.
"With categories spanning apparel, accessories, and footwear, we’re setting the stage for innovation, originality, and breathtaking design that celebrates leather’s enduring beauty and versatility.”
The submission period for design entries is currently open until June 7, 2024. On June 12, the selected designs will be announced, and the designers will be invited to submit their physical products. From June 17 until August 12, physical products may be submitted.
The competition has three categories: Apparel, Accessories, and Footwear. Designs must be made up of at least 50% cowhide leather to honour its strength, beauty, and durability.
It's important to note that fur and exotic skins are not allowed. The Final Event will occur in October 2024, and the date and location will be confirmed soon
