US beef exports are down in volume but up in value
The US Meat Export Federation (USMEF) has published figures showing exports of beef in the first two months of this year of 203,647 tonnes in volume, a fall of 1%.
In terms of value, however, revenues from these shipments were just under $1.6 billion, an increase of 9% compared to the figure for January and February last year.
USMEF said beef exports to the Caribbean were “the largest on record”, and that demand from Mexico, Central America and South America had also grown.
“Tight beef supplies are definitely a challenge for exporters, and that situation is not going to change anytime soon,” USMEF chief executive, Dan Halstrom, said. “But on a positive note, we are seeing more opportunities for under-utilised beef cuts in the global marketplace.”
