Lobatse leather park targets December production
25/03/2024
The first batch of wet blue processed leather is expected to be produced by December of this year. The second phase will focus on transitioning production from tannage to post-tannage, leading up to phase three for the finished leather stage. The final stage is intended for private sector entrepreneurs, in particular SMEs.
The Leather Park project aims to supply the private sector with hides and skins, raw to finished leather tanneries and the manufacturing of various leather products such as shoes, accessories and garments. The project includes the development of a complex for different tanneries, supported by the Botswana Meat Commission (BMC) and primary infrastructure such as a common effluent treatment plant and a sewage treatment plant.
Once fully functional, the park is expected to employ up to 10,000 individuals, making it a sustainable economic diversification effort.
