Irish grass-fed beef gets protected status

Irish grass-fed beef has been given a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status, similar to champagne in France and Irish whiskey.

To qualify, cattle must spend at least 220 days a year on pasture and derive at least 90% of their feed intake from grass. This is the fourth product from Ireland to receive PGI status.

The Northern Ireland agriculture minister, Andrew Muir, said the award would enhance the Irish grass-fed beef brand and help it be at the top of shelves internationally. Irish agriculture minister, Charlie McConalogue, called it a "very positive day" for farmers and the beef sector.
