New York bill could promote automotive transparency

New legislation recently introduced in New York seeks to address deceptive labelling of interior materials in car sales.

The proposed Consumer Protection and Automotive Transparency Act, introduced by Assemblyman Charles Fall, is designed to bring more clarity and transparency to the labelling of materials used in seating, steering wheels, and gear shifters. This will empower consumers to make informed purchasing decisions.

According to Fall, the current laws are insufficient in protecting consumers from deceptive practices. Such practices have eroded trust and created unfair advantages in the marketplace. The Consumer Protection and Automotive Transparency Act seeks to level the playing field, protect consumers from unethical tactics, and create a more honest and competitive automotive industry.

The proposed law will establish defined standards for materials such as leather and fabric. Labels will have to specify the percentage composition of materials if no single material constitutes over 70%. The legislation will also require clear labelling for cars and prohibit marketing names used in the automotive industry such as MBtex, ActiveX, and Alcantera.
