Bangladesh - Short term environment certificates for tanneries
Salman F Rahman, the Private Industry and Investment Adviser of the Bangladesh Prime Minister, announced that tannery industry businesses will be issued short-term environmental certificates until Eid-al-Adha to promote leather exports, according to local media.
Non-compliant businesses will have to shut down their operations. Some concessions will be provided to businesses for Eid-al-Adha, but this will be temporary, and the environment, agriculture, and public health will not be compromised.
The Environment Minister and Industries Minister have agreed to work together to curb pollution caused by tannery industries in Savar. Timelines will be enforced to begin ETP in the factories after Eid-al-Adha. The Industries Minister said that refurbishing the CETP of tanneries is being done with short and long-term plans.
