Tanning’s impact is lower than that of hide-waste, Gruppo Dani confirms
Leather manufacturer Gruppo Dani has used figures from a lifecycle assessment (LCA) it has carried out to deconstruct false online claims that turning hides into leather creates more carbon emissions than letting the material go to waste.
According to the Gruppo Dani LCA, tanning a hide has an impact of around 16 kilos of CO2-equivalent. It has said that one common method of getting rid of unwanted hides, incineration, would instead have a carbon footprint of around 18 kilos of CO2-equivalent.
The lower-impact activity, leather manufacturing, also produces material that can be made into shoes, bags, car interiors and other objects that people need and use every day, the company said.
