Challenging year for US beef exports
Beef exports from the US reached almost 1.3 million tonnes in 2023, a fall in volume of 12% year on year. The total value was just under $10 billion, down by 15%.
The US Meat Export Federation (USMEF) has said that despite this fall in value year on year, the 2023 total was still the third-highest annual value on record for beef exports.
“There is no question that 2023 was a challenging year for US beef exports,” said USMEF chief executive, Dan Halstrom, “especially in our largest Asian markets, where economic conditions have weighed on foodservice demand.”
He pointed out that there had also been challenges on the supply side too, with less product available for export from packer plants.
