Figures from Australia show that meat companies there shipped more than 1.8 million tonnes of red meat to more than 100 countries in the 12 months to the end of November 2023.

Revenues from these shipments were in excess of AUS $17 billion, a record figure.

China remained the number-one destination for Australian meat exports, importing 206,193 tonnes of beef and 165,245 tonnes of lamb and mutton.

Japan is the second-largest export customer of Australian beef. Meat and Livestock Australia said Japan remains “a unique market” because it is highly sophisticated but also has a fragmented retail food market.

The US also continued to be a major market for Australian grassfed beef and lamb.
