Tokyo exhibition highlights leather through photography
An exhibition showcasing the works of a photographer who was born and raised in Tatsu City, a hub for leather production, has commenced at the Fuji film Square, a multipurpose showroom that Fujifilm opened in Tokyo Midtown in 2007 as part of its activities to promote the inherent values of photography.
The exhibition features photographs that document the entire process of producing dairy products, from the dairy farmer to the tanner to the final product. Through these images, the exhibition aims to encourage viewers to ponder over the "importance of life" and the role of dairy products that generate profit from the skin of animals that are primarily raised for meat products.
The "New Stories of Photographers" project is aimed at supporting young photographers and showcasing their work. As part of this project, there is a photo exhibition by Yuichi Kamiyoshikawa, who has been capturing the process of making cowhide products.
Mr. Kamiyoshikawa became interested in the process of making cowhide wallets after photographing them, and he decided to document the process while communicating with the people involved, from livestock farmers who raise cattle to tanners in his hometown of Tatsuno City, Hyogo Prefecture.
Through careful interviews, Mr. Kamiyoshikawa weaves together a story of how cowhide products are made. This photo exhibition is an opportunity to learn about the journey of these products from raw materials to finished goods.
The exhibition runs from January 19 until February 1.
