Snowstorms hit US meatpackers

Tyson Foods has announced that it had to temporarily reduce its meatpacking operations at some facilities in the U.S. this week due to harsh winter weather, according to reports on Reuters. The company said it was working to fulfil its customer orders at other locations.

This news comes just one week after major meatpackers, Tyson and Cargill, suspended their operations at beef plants in Kansas due to a massive snowstorm, which reduced U.S. meat production.

The recent blizzard-like weather has caused major disruptions for meatpacking workers, with some being left stranded on highways and others forced to spend the night at the slaughterhouses where they work. These conditions have had a significant impact on beef production, which has already been affected by the reduction of herds by U.S. ranchers.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that meatpackers only slaughtered around 94,000 cattle, which was a 25% decrease from the previous week.
