Global meat organisation to have new secretary general

03/01/2024

Director of international market development at UK industry body AHDB Beef & Lamb, Dr Phil Hadley, is leaving the role to become the new secretary general of the International Meat Secretariat (IMS).

IMS represents the global meat and livestock sector. It says livestock plays “a vital role in agriculture” and is an important contributor to economies around the globe. It provides vital nutrients to a growing world population as part of a healthy, sustainable diet. “Meat is an essential source of high-quality protein, iron and vitamin B12,” it says.

In addition, it points out that animals are “a crucial link in nutrient cycles in agriculture”, returning nutrients to the soil in forms that plants can readily use. It also highlights the importance of by-products of livestock, including leather.

Combined, the organisation’s membership represents more than 75% of global production of cattle, pig, and sheep meat. Its headquarters are in Paris. The non-profit organisation will celebrate its fiftieth anniversary in 2024.
