Engineering and technology company Bosch recently announced its counterfeit detection system, Origify, a product-specific optical fingerprint to detect luxury products at every stage of their lifecycle. The system is claimed to be a solution for authenticating and tracking a wide range of products and works invisibly without interfering with a product's design or requiring additional marking on the product.

The process involves three steps. First, each individual product is captured with one or more images via a special camera in a dedicated Origify hardware module. The captured product is then digitally stored in a tamper- and forgery-proof cloud with a data set that cannot be changed or falsified. Later, an app and a suitable smartphone can be used to check whether the product has been captured by the original manufacturer or is possibly counterfeit or falsified, and requires further investigation.

"Every single product even in an industrially manufactured series, in the case of a watch, the dial or the movement; in the case of a handbag or shoes, the leather and surface structure, has unique features on its surface that are not repeated in the series and that we can capture with Origify," explains Oliver Steinbis, who is responsible for the project in the Bosch Group.

Origify automatically processes and stores the data in a secure manner. The initial capture takes place at a manufacturer directly after production and can also be integrated into automated production. If a branded product has not already been recorded directly with production at the manufacturer, subsequent recording can be implemented in service centres or repair shops. This is particularly useful for businesses in the "Certified Pre-Owned" or "Pre-Loved" market segments. Origify allows these pre-owned luxury products to be recorded and certified. Undetected products are exposed in seconds.
