USDA puts October cattle-on-feed figure at second-highest ever
The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has given a figure of 11.6 million for the total number of cattle on feed in the US at the start of October.
This figure, 11.6 million head, is the second-highest USDA has recorded for the start of October since it began to calculate the figures in 1996. It represents a 1% increase on the figure for October 2022.
There were more than 6.9 million steers and steer calves in the total, up slightly on the previous year. These made up 60% of the total. There were more than 4.6 million heifers and heifer calves, an increase of 1% year on year.
The numbers are based on cattle in feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 head or more.
