Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun has highlighted the need for a countrywide network to collect and preserve raw hides for the development of the local leather industry.

Speaking as the chief guest at a workshop titled 'Potentials and Challenges of Leather Sector in Bangladesh: Points to Ponder', organized by the Support to Sustainable Graduation Project (SSGP) of the Economic Relations Division (ERD), the minister called for an enhancement of the skill base in the leather industry.

Leather, as one of Bangladesh's most important and promising sectors, was the highest export earning sector of the country after readymade garments in the last fiscal year and has been identified by the government as one of its top priority sectors.

Currently, leather and leather products exported from Bangladesh enjoy Duty Free Quota Free (DFQF) market access in various countries and benefit from various government supports, including cash incentives. In this context, the workshop was organized to identify the potentials and challenges of this sector and to discuss strategies to utilise it to its fullest potential.
