Student design competition Real Leather, Stay Different has announced Tamar Elbaz, from Shenkar College in Israel, and Ana Del Rio Mullarkey, from De Montford University in the UK, as joint-winners of the 2023 international design prize.

At a ceremony in Milan on October 16, Ms Elbaz was named as joint-winner for a design project she called Whim, while Ms Del Rio won for a design called El Domingo.

Co-chair of the judges and vice-president of footwear group Wolverine Worldwide, Kerry Brozyna, commented: “It’s imperative that we continually reassess our material choices and production methods. With leather, a by-product of the food industry, the decision becomes clear. As we tap into land resources for sustenance, it’s our duty to utilise the by-products efficiently. Before resorting to fossil fuel derivatives, the focus should be on natural, enduring and eco-friendly materials.”
