UNIDO announce environmental footprint guideline project

26/09/2023

The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) has called for proposals to create guidelines for accurately assessing the environmental impact of leather production.

The goal is to provide a scientific and harmonised approach for policymakers and industry experts. The project will be funded by UNIDO and supported by the International Council of Tanners (ICT), the International Council of Hides, Skins and Leather Trade Association (ICHSLTA) and the Leather & Hide Council of America (LHCA).

Current methods for assessing leather production's environmental impact are outdated, particularly in regard to animal rearing. The proposed guidelines will help put the assessment of environmental impact on a more relevant footing.
