Sheep and cattle slaughter rates up in Australia
Australia’s cattle slaughter for the year so far had reached 685,175 head by the end of July. Industry promotional body Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) said this was an increase of 28% compared to the same time last year.
And with figures of more than 1.6 million head for the year to date, sheep slaughter is up by 63% year on year.
MLA said figures were up because there is increased supply and cheaper livestock prices. It said slaughter activity had picked up in recent weeks because maintenance and repair work at abattoirs, which takes place regularly in the southern hemisphere winter, is now complete and production is fully up and running again.
