Automotive companies in China produced almost 11.3 million passenger vehicles in the first half of 2023, an increase of 8.1% compared to the same period last year.

Figures from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers show that original equipment makers producing in China made more than 5.6 million sports utility vehicles (SUVs) over the six-month period. They also made a  little over 5 million standard cards. People-carriers or multi-purpose vehicles contributed almost 475,000 units to the total.

These three categories showed growth of 13.5%, 2.4% and 24.1%, respectively, year on year.

A fourth vehicle category, crossovers between cars and SUVs, contributed fewer than 125,000 units to the total in the January-June period, a decline of 21% year on year.
