Export tax leaves Ugandan abattoir with excess hides

11/07/2023

Dealers at the Ugandan Old Port Road city abattoir are concerned that thousands of  hides and skins will go to waste following a hike in export duty tax.

Speaking to local media, traders from the abattoir said that tanneries were now rejecting material as they were unable to pay the increased costs following a 50% increase levied on hides and skins, with more than 2,000 skins now left unsold.

In response to the concerns, a spokesperson for the Uganda Revenue Authority said that consultation with the Ugandan Finance ministry was ongoing and for the meantime a stay on a recent 10% incremental rise to reach the 50% had been put on hold.
