Figures from Turkey suggest slaughter figures of 3 million sheep and goat and 1.2 million head of cattle for the Eid al-Adha festival at the end of June.

Commentators have said this is around half the levels that Turkey registered before the covid-19 pandemic and that figures have fallen steadily since 2019.

Foot-and-mouth disease has been confirmed in Turkey and this has led to restrictions on transporting livestock from one province to another.

There have also been sharp increases in the price of live animals.
