According to a department release, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade has granted an in-principal approval for a 151 acre cluster park to be built in Ratwad, approximately 130Km south of Mumbai.

The mega leather footwear and accessories cluster park will act as a hub for collaboration within the leather industry combining manufacturers, designers, suppliers and artisans. “This initiative reflects Maharashtra's commitment to fostering economic growth, driving employment opportunities, and propelling the leather sector to new heights. The Mega Leather Footwear and Accessories Cluster Park in Ratwad will serve as a catalyst for the state's continued success in the global leather market," said the release.

Maharashtra ranks as the eighth largest producer and exporter of leathergoods in the country and the location choice for the park will exploit its proximity to the port at Dhigi but also the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, which accounts for more than 20% of the nation’s leather exports. The site also has an existing industrial ecosystem with access to power, water and common effluent treatment plant infrastructure.

Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation, who applied for the approval, are working with the Council for Leather Exports (CLE) and the Leather Industry development Corporation Maharashtra (LIDCOM) in the development of the park.
