Freiberg Leather Days concludes successfully

The eleventh Freiberg Leather Days seminar came to a successful conclusion on June 29, with the two-day programme hosting 30 presentations.

Organisers, the German Association for Chemistry and Technology in Tanning (VGCT) and the FILK Freiberg research institute welcomed over 180 attendees to the “Nikolaikirche”, a Romanesque church rebuilt in 1750 that is now used as an events venue. Finished product brands, automotive seating companies, leather chemicals and machinery manufacturers, specialist researchers and academics were all represented, alongside tanners.

During the event, the annual VGCT awards were presented. Dr Heinrich Franke was the recipient of the Annual Award, in recognition of his many years of commitment to the VGCT and to leather research, with specific mention of his leadership in the leather auxiliaries commission. “When a third party recognises your work it’s a very nice feeling” said  Dr. Franke.

Other awards were given to Charleen Moeller, the Promotion award for young talent, and the Recognition award was shared between Jutta Knodler, Ekkehard Werner, Holm Flachowsky and Dr. Thomas Heinzig for their work on the ECO2L tool for determining the energy balance in leather production.

For 2024, the event will be held on June 12 and 13 with the venue to be announced.
