Q1 hide and leather exports from Spain increase in value
Spain’s customs authorities have published figures showing that tanners and traders in Spain brought in €228.3 million in exports of hides and leather in the first quarter of 2023.
This represents an increase of 5.5% compared to the same quarter last year. The figures refer only to export values, not volume.
There was positive news for the country’s tanners in that finished and semi-finished leather’s contribution to the 2023 total went up year on year, while raw hides’ share went down. Finished leather’s contribution was just under €150 million, a share of 65.6%. In the first quarter of 2022, finished leather had a share of 63.7%.
The gain for semi-finished leather was bigger. In the first three months of 2023, shipments of semi-finished leather brought in revenues of €32.5 million, which equates to 14.2% of the total. The corresponding figure for 2022 was 10.9%.
Exports of raw hides brought in €45.9 million from January-March 2023, or 20.1% of the total figure. This contrasts with a share of 25.4% in the first quarter of 2022.
