SLF hits the ground on SIPS project in Tanzania
The Sustainable Leather Foundation (SLF) has begun work on the Support to Industrialisation and Productive Sectors (SIPS) project, participating in two workshops in Dodma and Mwanza.
In Dodma, 45 representatives from leather and footwear manufacturers and local and national government assembled to discuss key challenges for the country including retention of high quality domestic raw material and support for implementation of better practices and structures. The second workshop, held in Mwanza covered more specific training requirements specific to the gathered attendees, consisting of hide collectors and workers from local abattoirs.
A statement posted on their social media channels said: “As a first step in the SIPS project, this was an encouraging week that began to lay foundations for improvement that will result in real implementation for the future. We’re looking forward to continuing this important work in the region.”
The initial project will run until November this year and a key component of the work is to ensure that local representatives are trained and given the required tools to continue to drive forward improvements in the leather value chain for the future.
