Pangea publishes first sustainability report

Automotive leather group Pangea has published its inaugural sustainability report, for all operations in 2021.

The benchmarking report focusses on the groups Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) framework plus visions for the future. Reflecting Pangea’s performance up to the year ended December 31, 2021, the largest focus over the next two years, according to a company statement, will be energy management.

At the time of publication, overall scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions amounted to 1.14 Kg CO2e per square metre of finished leather*.

The report also presented various targets set by the company such as an 8-16% reduction in fresh water intake intensity and to obtain an annualised 2-3% global energy efficiency, by 2025.

Environmental targets also include the move to increased renewable chemistry content of their products, where currently 10.3% of total chemical usage “comprises of 100% natural renewable content and plant based extracts”. The company will also establish a global waste management system, to incorporate circularity initiatives with supplier partners. For the period of the report, the company recycled 14% of the total solid waste generated globally, against a backdrop that saw total waste created equivalent to 268g per square meter of leather produced.

On releasing the report, Pangea president and CEO, Randy Johnson said: “The need to report our sustainable goals and progress was driven by our commitment to not only remain competitive, but to lead the industry in trust, service, and passion for natural leather.”

In the same week the report was published, Pangea also announced that all their operational units were now certified as LWG gold, something that had been a goal from the 2021 report.
