Funding for design course for women in Uganda
A fashion- and design-focused non-profit working with artisans and entrepreneurs in Uganda, Artisan Global, has received a grant from New York-based charity the Fashion Impact Fund.
Artisan Global will use the funding to help ten women in Uganda participate in a nine-month fashion and design course. It said the programme’s aim was to equip economically marginalised women with design and business skills to pursue sustainable income opportunities and use fashion “to ignite community change in northern Uganda”.
While footwear and leathergoods design will not be a core focus of the nine-month programme, students will have the opportunity to incorporate leather into their designs in the later stages.
Also, lead designers teaching the course are designers who already use leather in handbags and other accessories.
