Steer weights reach highest on record in Australia

Steers in feedlots in Australia fell in number in the first quarter of this year have but have reached the highest average weight per head on record.

New figures from Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) the Australian Lot Feeders’ Association (ALFA) show that Australian feedlots had more than 1.5 million head of cattle at the end of the quarter.

MLA said availability of steers at feedyards declined during the quarter, but that the weight of steers sold from feedyards had increased by 2% to reach an average of 425 kilos per head.

It said this was the the heaviest average weight of feeder steers on record.
