Australia: lamb exports outpace record-breaking 2022
Exports of lamb from Australia increased by 6% in the first quarter compared to the same quarter in 2022.
Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA), the main body for promoting the country’s red-meat exports, said it found the first-quarter increase remarkable because 2022 was a record year for lamb shipments.
Full-year figures for 2022 show that Australian farmers exported 284,257 tonnes of lamb, which was the highest figure on record. These exports brought in revenue of 3.4 billion Australian dollars (US$2.25 billion).
What boosted figures further in the first quarter of this year was strong growth in exports to key markets in Asia, principally China and South Korea. Shipments to China were up by 29%, while South Korea imported 47% more Australian lamb in the first quarter than in the same period in record-breaking 2022.
