China imports down in 2022
Recent figures from the China Leather Industry Association revealed that 2022 imports of raw hides and skins, semi-finished leather and fur totalled 1.723 million tonnes, with a value of $2.74 billion. The figures represent a decrease of 7.6% and 22.5% respectively from the previous year, also down 5.8% and 14.3% respectively on 2019 figures.
Break down of the figures showed imports of 1.207 million tons for raw hides and skins (down 3.1%), representing a value of $1.35 billion (down 6.9%).
Ranked by import value, the United States, Australia, the European Union, Canada, New Zealand and Argentina, with a combined share of 90.1%, represent the top six import countries/regions.
Imports from the United States, Australia and the European Union, all saw decline in 2022, and were mainly imported by the tanneries in Hebei, Fujian, Tianjin, Shandong, Henan provinces and cities.
Semi-finished leather imports totalled 501,000 tonnes (down 15.8%) with a total value of $1.02 billion (down 18.3%). Brazil, ASEAN, the European Union, the United States, Argentina and Bangladesh, with combined share of 78.9 percent, ranked as the top six import countries/regions.
Imports of raw skins for fur totalled 11,900 tones with a total value of $35.1 million down 37.9% and 72.6% respectively.
