New Toyota CEO sets out carbon commitments

Automotive group Toyota’s new chief executive, Koji Sato, has confirmed that the company will work to promote electrified vehicles and reduce CO2 emissions, “leaving no one behind, including in emerging markets”.

Mr Sato was announced as the group’s new chief executive at the start of the year, but April 1 was the day he took over from predecessor, Akio Toyoda. The new group chief executive was previously Toyota’s chief branding officer and, simultaneously, head of its high-end brand Lexus.

He hosted a media briefing to set out a new management policy and direction for the group on April 7. He said: “We aim to reduce average CO2 emissions for the vehicles we sell worldwide by 33% by 2030 and by more than 50% by 2035, compared to 2019 levels. We will continue to promote decarbonisation globally and steadily toward 2050.”
