Turkey confirms new strain of FMD
The Turkish Ministry of Agriculture & Forestry have reported the detection of the SAT-2 strain of foot and mouth disease (FMD).
The detected cases, the first known in the country were identified in late march and are located in the eastern half of Turkey. Local media reports suggest additional cases may be in other parts of the country, and the ministry believe the virus originated from illegal movement of cattle from Iraq into Turkey.
In response to the finding, the ministry of Agriculture and forestry has brought in measures to halt the spread of the disease including quarantine, disinfection procedures and vaccination.
Animal markets have been closed and movement of susceptible animals has been restricted.
