Volumes up, values down for Brazil’s leather exports
Brazilian packers, tanners and traders exported 25.1 million square-metres of leather in the first two months of 2023, earning export revenues of $174.6 million. These figures represent an increase in volume of 6.6% year on year, but a decline in value of 17.5%.
The three main buyers of Brazilian hides and leather are China, the US and Italy. The value of exports to all three of these markets fell in the first two months, although shipment volumes to China and Italy were up.
Quoting official figures from Brazil’s overseas trade department, the country’s main leather industry body, CICB, said there had also been significant increases in exports to three other important markets: Thailand, South Korea and Taiwan.
