Tanners in Turkey sway towards domestic raw material
Measures are in place in Turkey to promote the use of domestic hides in the country’s tanneries.
The government has imposed a 16% import duty on bovine hides coming into the country as crust. In parallel, a $500-per-tonne export duty is in place to discourage shipment overseas of Turkish wet blue.
Industry commentators have said that good-quality raw material is available at good prices in the domestic market.
A recent analysis of prices shows that wet-salted, machine-flayed bull hides are available at an average of $1.30 per kilo. And small-skin tanners are able to buy good-quality, wet-salted sheepskins with an area of seven or eight square-feet for around $2.50 or $3 per piece.
