US: cattle on feed down by 3% at start of 2023

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has said feedlots across the country with a capacity of 1,000 head or more held a total of 11.7 million head of cattle at the start of January. USDA said this figure was 3% below levels at the same point last year.

Just over 7 million steers and steer calves were included in this inventory, down by 4% year on year.

Heifers and heifer calves accounted for more than 4.5 million head, down by 1%.
