Educating the consumer is paramount for Leather UK
Industry representative body Leather UK has launched a new labelling project, offering swing-tags that say ‘Leather for Life’ for finished-product brands to use.
In consumer research it carried out in 2022, Leather UK found that only 24% of respondents knew that leather was a by-product of the meat and dairy industries. The remaining three-quarters displayed confusion and poor understanding about the origin of leather.
The ‘Leather for Life’ swing-tag project is a response to this; the new labels are intended as an educational tool to share the facts about leather, tanning and the leather sector.
Each tag contains a QR code that links to a section on the Leather Uk website where information about leather products and production can be found. The tag is available to any company in the UK involved in the design and manufacture of leathergoods.
Director of Leather UK, Dr Kerry Senior, said the project would serve as “an additional means of tackling the misinformation that surrounds the material and the industry”.
