Colombia’s footwear sector faces labour shortage
Besides the challenges of inflation and the rising cost of raw materials, one of the main problems confronting Colombia’s footwear industry is the ongoing shortage of qualified personnel.
According to William Parrado, director of economic research at industry body ACICAM, manufacturing jobs are unattractive to younger people.
He said the footwear industry was working with national training institute Sena to try to bring new workers into the sector.
In December, the Colombian government decreed an increase of 16% in the national minimum wage, taking it to around $240 per month.
Sector estimates indicate that the footwear industry has 83,000 workers in Colombia.
