Future concerns cloud the picture for Italian leathergoods

09/01/2023

A recent survey commissioned by industry body Assopellettieri has found that Italy’s leathergoods sector, in the first nine months of 2022, recorded an increase of 8.6% in sales in the domestic market and export growth of 15.7%.

Overall, turnover rose by 14.7% year on year and production increased by 9.2%.

However, commenting on the survey, the president of Assopellettieri, Franco Gabbrielli, said he was concerned about the outlook for 2023. He cited rising energy costs, uncertainty in China following a rise in covid cases, and the predictions of looming recession in western countries triggered by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
